Longer series of books tend to be known to make things more epic. A single novel can be rather grand. A trilogy, such as Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy or J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, can be epic by comparison. Michael Stackpole’s Rogue Squadron quartet tells a fantastic tale. A sextology such as the War of the Spider Queen edited by Star Wars veteran R.A. Salvatore goes on to tell a story of mythic proportions. And the fabled 19 volume tome that is the New Jedi Order defines legends, having achieved a status and a fanbase comparable to that of the films that spawned its saga. So you’d think a nine novel series, though a skyscraper next to the Olympus that is NJOE, would be the next best thing, wouldn’t you?

For those of you like me who hear “spoiler” and run as far in the other direction as possible, you can finally find out if Troy Denning’s Abyss- his first Star Wars novel since the controversial ending to Legacy of the Force – is any good or not.
Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker and his son Ben don’t know what they risk as they plague the secrets of the Mind Walkers. Nor do they know the dangers that face them even here. Back home, the other Jedi face off on their own unfamiliar battlefield- the world of courts and politicks.

The second of what will be nine spoiler-free reviews of Fate of the Jedi is ready. For those of you like me who hear “spoiler” and run as far in the other direction as possible, you can finally find out if Christie Golden’s Omen- her debut in the Star Wars expanded universe- is any good or not.
Luke Skywalker, founder and Grand Master of the Jedi Order, is in the midst of what has already been an event-filled exile to atone for the mistakes of Jedi past. At the critical time period where Skywalker’s wisdom and ability are denied to them, the Jedi Order needs him most, as Jedi continue to succumb to the mysterious delusions that have been affecting the generation raised during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. Even as Luke searches for the cause of this mysterious affliction, another danger to the Jedi and the galaxy arises in secret.
